How to Replace a Steering Rack

Replacing a steering rack is one of the more difficult of the do it yourself car repair jobs. Before you start, read the instructions completely and make sure you have everything that you will need. Also, keep in mind that these instructions are generalized, and will not be specific to your vehicle. Some steps may need to be done slightly different. It is recommended that you read the factory shop manual first. Lastly, you will need someone to help you with the project.

Air Ratchet Wrench

You will need screwdrivers, a ratchet and socket set with extensions, wrenches, a hammer, pliers, a wire brush, power steering filter, power steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, a tie rod separator, a jack, jack stands, possibly an engine support fixture, and of course the new power steering rack.

Air Ratchet Wrench

First, loosen all the wheel lug nuts and jack up the front of the car. Then, take off both front wheels. Start with the steering wheel turned forward, and turn it slowly until you can get a socket to the steering shaft joint bolt. After you take the bolt off, use the screwdriver to tap the universal joint upwards. This ensures that you can easily move the spline clamp. Don't remove the spline clamp just yet. Unbolt the bolts under the front plastic pan, then remove it. Next, unbolt the tie rod bolt on the hubs on both sides. Take the tie rod separator; push them out on both sides. Loosen first the tie rod locking bolt, then the tie rod ball joint. Remove the rubber boot and loosen the ball joint. Unbolt the hydraulic feed-and-return line, and remove the steering rack mounting bolts. Have your helper turn the steering wheel right, then drop the rack down that side. Then, do the same for the opposite side.

Take the hydraulic line holder bracket, boot, mounting rubber, metal bracket and put them on the new rack. Since the wheel is already to the left, install that side first. Then, position the spline shaft and clamp correctly. Once it's done, turn the wheel and do the same for the other side. Reinstall the mounting bolts on the steering rack. Install the feed-and-return hydraulic lines. Center the steering rack and steering wheel. Re-install the ball joint, rubber boot, then tie rods. Install the steering column universal shaft spline clamp bolt, then install the front pan. Put the front wheels back on.

You're all done.  It's not one of the easier do it yourself jobs but if you follow the instructions above and read your vehicle manual, you should be just fine.

Tools Required By Plumbers

The specialized skill of plumbing is a mandatory need of many residential home owners, these days, tomorrow and in the future. Many people go to trade schools and gain this skill so that they can develop into certified plumbers and start their own business someday.

Air Ratchet Wrench

Air Ratchet Wrench

However, for a skilled or a novice plumber to carry out his plumbing work efficiently, he will need the correct and sufficient tools. Here you can learn the fundamental tools and supplies that is desired and used by a plumber.

A Caulk gun- this used to clutch tubes of caulk or glue. A steel handle pushes the bead of caulk out of the plunger.

A Flashlight- a flashlight will be required for plumbers to inspect pipes and drain openings.

A circuit tester- this is a very valuable device for testing for live current in an electrical outlet or appliance.

A ratchet wrench will be needed to tighten and loosen bolts and nuts

A hacksaw can be used for cutting metal and also plastic pipes.

A utility knife will in addition come in handy while doing a plumbing job. They have a razor sharp blade that is helpful on behalf of trimming the ends of plastic pipes.

A putty knife is helpful for scraping away old putty from appliances and fixtures.

Needle nose pliers will prove worthwhile for holding little objects and for getting into confined areas.

A Tubing cutter makes straight smooth cuts into plastic and copper pipes.

A closet auger is a slender tube used to clear toilet clogs. It has a crank handle on one end of a flexible auger cable. A bend in the tube allows the tube to achieve the base of the toilet and there is a rubber sleeve to prevent the toilet from getting scratched.

A hand auger is referred to as a snake and is used to clear clogs in drains. One more helpful tool is a blow bag. It is used to clear clogs in drains and is attached to garden hose to remove the clogs with powerful spurts of water.

For the most part and very common tool for plumbing work is a plunger. It removes clogs with water and air pressure. A standard plumber can be used to clear clogs in showers, sinks and floor drains. Nearly in all places you go you will see a plunger, even in restaurant bathrooms.

So to recap, these are merely a small amount of the tools required to effectively carry out a plumbing job at home. With the correct tools and correct methods, you can save yourself some money by doing plumbing on your own.

Car Tips on How to Replace Spark Plugs

Changing spark plugs is a large part of a regular tune up, but did you know that you can perform this easy maintenance job yourself? A spark plug is basically a high voltage bridge that electricity passes through. They are very cheap to buy and easy to install. It does not hurt to replace them each year; doing so can increase the efficiency of your engine and even help out with gas mileage a bit. This procedure is not difficult as long as you follow the directions. The tools you will need include a ratchet wrench, a 12 inch socket extension, and a plug socket for your vehicle.

Air Ratchet Wrench

Your plugs may be easily located if you follow the thick, black cables As a rule of thumb, 4 cylinder engines have their plugs at the top of the engine in a row, 8 cylinder engines have their spark plugs 4 on each side, and 6 cylinder engines can have them either way. S plugs are placed in a specific order, so it does matter in which order you place them and take them out. Starting at the end of the row, grab the spark plug as close to the engine as you can, and pull it out. If you grab them too far up you could damage the cord and have to replace it.

Air Ratchet Wrench

If you have not already done so, place the spark plug socket and extension on your ratchet. Inside of the plug socket, you should see black rubber or foam on the other end. This is useful because it holds the plug into place as you take it out of the engine. Set your ratchet to loosen, and place it over the end of the plug. You can now easily remove the plug. After you have removed each plug, it is a good idea to examine it. There should be a little grime and dirt on the end, but if you have too much it could be a sign of trouble.

When you buy plugs for your cars nowadays, they will usually come already gapped. This makes things a whole lot easier. In order to place the new sp plug in the hole, place the plug wire end of the plug into the socket. Now hold the extension and place it in as far as it will go. Be careful while doing so though, as you don't want to damage the plug. You can now screw in the new plug using just your hands. You will only be able to do this to a point though, and then you will have to use the wrench. Once it is in, you may put the wire back on.

Now once the first one is done, you just have to repeat the process with each of the remaining plugs. Don't worry; it gets easier each time you do it. If you pulled out all of the spark plugs at once, you will have a difficult time knowing which cable goes where and things will not go well if you place the wrong cables on the plugs.

How to Check Spark Plugs

The spark plugs, although one of the smaller parts of any vehicle, are also one of the most essential parts. If your spark plugs are faulty or absent, the car will not start as the engine will not fire. Keeping them up to scratch is therefore an element of vehicle maintenance that any driver should be competent in. It is worth knowing, too, that spark plugs do not last forever - you will need to replace them, and being able to do this yourself will save you money in garage costs. Checking them regularly for faults or damage is vitally important. As a rule of thumb, your spark plugs should be checked once a year or once every 10,000 miles, and after double this time or distance they should be replaced.

Air Ratchet Wrench

To replace them, you can buy and fit your own spark plugs or take the car to a garage where they can do the job themselves. However, the expense of taking the car to be repaired by professionals is entirely avoidable if you follow a common sense procedure. It is important to buy a trusted, popular brand of plugs and to make sure they are compliant with your engine. Tools and materials for the job include: A can of compressed air, a spark plug socket and ratchet wrench, a spark plug gauge, labeling tape, silicone dielectric grease and penetrating oil.

Air Ratchet Wrench

When removing spark plugs, the first thing to do is remove the wires. If you are replacing the plugs shortly after driving the car, allow the engine to cool down first - let it cool completely as the temperature a car engine reaches after use is dangerous. Label the wires with the tape before removing them (for ease of identification), and twist and pull the plug wire boots. This will leave an open port which can be cleared with compressed air.

To remove the plugs themselves, you position the socket over the first plug, attach the ratchet wrench and turn it counterclockwise. Remove each of them and as you remove them, label them with their location and condition. This enables you to identify any faults. Keeping a close watch on which plugs go where, which ones need replacing, and which ones can go back into the engine will save any problems later on. Under the hood of your car, and/or in the user manual, you will find any instructions on specific requirements for how to fit the new plugs.

Cross-threading spark plugs can render them useless, so to avoid this you need to coat them with penetrating oil prior to their installation. Spark plugs with a gasket need to be turned with a ratchet wrench between a quarter and a half turn, while any others will require only one sixteenth of a turn. To ensure that the cable wires fit securely onto the new spark plugs, coat the interior of the rubber boots with silicone grease. And there you have it - you've replaced your plugs. Keep detailed notes regarding what exactly you have done, so that you know when and how to perform similar maintenance in future.
