Know How to Replace the Starter of Your Own Car

Replacing our car's starter may not be an easy automotive task but we can't deny the fact that it is important to know how to replace a starter on our own.

Air Ratchet Wrench

The materials or tools needed to replace a starter include a marker, a flood light, a car jack, crescent wrenches, and a ratchet set.

Air Ratchet Wrench

The first step on how to replace a starter is the preparation. We need an access from below of the car, which means that the car has to be pulled onto jack stands or the car itself may be jacked up. We must check the chalk blocks if they are in place and the brake if it is all set before jacking up the car. An important tip when working under a car or any other type of vehicle is to be extremely careful not to touch any other electrical wires or contacts that are not supposed to be touched or fixed.

The second step on how to replace a starter is to find the starter that will be replaced. We need to find it because there are different locations of starters and it depends on the model of the automotive. We may start finding it on the side of the driver. Those who have not seen a starter before, more often than not, it looks like a tube measuring approximately six inches in diameter and eight inches in length. It features air-type holes on one end which go all the way surrounding the cylinder. It also features a mounting connection as well as a couple of electrical connections. With older automotives, the starter may be found on the engine top or inside the compartment of the engine.

Third step is the removal of the connections. As mentioned earlier, there are three connections, namely, the mounting connection and the two electrical connections. These must be removed but must be marked to avoid confusion. When removing the mounting connection, the tools that must be used are the Crescent wrench and ratchet. It must be noted that there are times when the connections are difficult to remove. The difficulty actually depends on the age of the automotive. It must also be noted that not a lot of force must be used when removing the connections because we might further damage the car and we might not have anything to drive in the end.

The fourth step on how to replace a starter is the installation. The reason why we need to mark the connections in the third step is because the starter will be installed using the reverse process on how we removed the connections.

The fifth step on how to replace a starter is the attachment of the negative cable of the battery onto the battery. The connection must then be tightened afterwards. Now, we may check whether all connections are properly done by starting the engine.

We must remember that the new starter motor has a core charge, which means that the old starter may be brought to the store to get a refund.

How to Upgrade Your 2001 Dodge Ram

It is essential to have working brake pads on the 2004 Dodge Ram. These are the devices that aid in halting your truck. When you step on the brakes, the cylinder in the caliper compresses the pads against the rotor. The pads will slide against the rotor bringing the Ram into a halt. If the brake pads are worn out, it has to be replaced.

Air Ratchet Wrench

1. Park you Dodge Ram on a leveled surface and have the emergency brakes on. Open your hood.

Air Ratchet Wrench

2. The caliper cylinder is compressed, and so to not blow a break line or the brake fluid reservoir, unscrews its cap for safety.

3. Use a jack to lift the front of your Dodge Ram and make sure that they are sitting securely on the jacks.

4. Take the front driver side wheel using a lug wrench.

5. Take the brake caliper off from the rotor. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts securing it. You then slide it at the top of the rotor. For the mean time, hang it to the frame using a bungee cord.

6. Using your hands, remove the brake pads that are inside the caliper.

7. Put a C-clamp inside the caliper and compress the cylinder by turning the caliper clockwise. This will then allow more room to insert the new brake pads. When the caliper cylinder is fully compressed, remove the C-clamp.

8. Go ahead and slide the new brake pads. Remove the bungee cord and slide the brake caliper back to the rotor.

9. Bolt the caliper back using the ratchet and socket.

10. Take the wheel back and slide it back to the hub and secure the lug nuts.

11. Jack the Dodge Ram down and get the jacks and clear the area.

12. Secure the cap of the brake fluid reservoir and then shut the hood.

13. Check the engines and see to it that the brakes feel right. Pump the brakes to remove any air that has accumulated and also to compress the brake pads to the right distance from the rotor.

How to Replace a Warped Or Worn Brake Disc

Replacing your warped or worn brake discs on a Toyota is something that you can do yourself. Although most people think that it's something that you have to take to the shop for, with just a little bit of knowhow, and this step-by-step guide, you will be able to do it all yourself. First of all, there are a few things that you are going to need. You are, of course, going to need the new brake discs and a jack. You will also need your lug wrench and a Phillips head screwdriver. Last, but not least, you will need a C clamp, an open end ratchet, and a dead blow hammer. When you get all of that stuff, keep reading, and you will see just how easy it is to replace this yourself.

Air Ratchet Wrench

Getting To Work

Air Ratchet Wrench

The first step is, of course, to remove the brake caliper. To do this, you would go about it just like you were going to replace your brake pads. You do this by jacking up the car, talking off the tire, and then removing the caliper. After you get it off, you need to hang it out of the way with a cord of some kind. Never just let your calipers hang! If you wanted to, you could take the caliper off, but then you would have to unbolt the break line, and no one wants to do that. Thus, if you can just get it hanging out of your way, you will be fine. Now that it's out of your way you have to remove the thing that was holding your caliper. As you will see, removing that is just like removing the caliper. Simply take off the two bolts in the back, and it's is off! Be sure not to lose any of the bolts that you take off, because you are going to need those to reattach it later!

Now all you have to do is take off your brake discs. You can do this using the large Phillips head screwdriver that we talked about you needing. Depending on the model of your Toyota, you may have to take off one or more bolts to remove it. In some rare cases, your screws could be stripped. If they are, you may have to drill them out. Either way, when you get the screws out, you can simply slide that old brake disc right off the hub. Every now and again, you will notice that the old brake discs do not want to come off. If that is the case, you are going to want to use that dead blow hammer we talked about. This is going to loosen things up a bit. After a few hard hits, you will be able to take off that old break disc. When you take it off, you can take your new brake discs, which will be all nice and shiny, and place it back on. As always, the installation is just the reverse of how you removed everything. Just do not forget to replace the brake disc screw. If you do, then you are in for one heck of a ride when you go to stop!

Few Side Notes

If you have never changed your own brakes before, then you are going to notice that this is not a good job for you. After all, the whole first part of doing this involves the fact that you have changed your own brake pads. That does not mean that you cannot do it, it just means that it is going to make everything a bit harder. Also, be sure to shop around for a good price on a new brake disc. Some places will try to overcharge you for a Toyota Brake disc, and that is not something that you should have to put up with. After all, the whole point of changing it yourself is to save money.

Water Contamination - the Enemy of Your Automotive Air Tools

Water contamination is the great enemy to your prized impact wrench and other expensive air tools.

Air Ratchet Wrench

The common misconception is that if you just drain the air supply tank in your air compressor of excess water, you are protecting your air tool from water damage. While draining your air supply tank is good, you are only preventing rust damage in the tank. The air outlet is generally at the top of the tank and the water in the bottom doesn't make it up there to damage your impact wrench.

Air Ratchet Wrench

How then does water get into your air lines and then to your air tool?

The answer is condensation.

Water condenses and builds up in the air hoses and then travels to your air tool. Also, on a cold winter morning the water that has accumulated in your air lines will freeze and cause even more damage. Frozen water can break loose and damage your tools or even block the air flow in the line.

The solution to this problem is install a water filter in your air hose. A good place to put it is midway down your air hose. There it will be out of the way when use your impact wrench under your car and you are trying to get into a tight space. A small investment in a water filter will go a long to prolong the life of your expensive air tools.

Tools You May Need to Repair Your Car

Let's talk about some tools you will need when repairing your car. Where do I get them, and what do I need? These are good questions. If you are doing basic things, oil change, air filters, wipers, then a basic hand tool kit would be fine when doing these type of repairs. By this I mean, wrenches, sockets, ratchets, and extensions. Also some screwdrivers both phillips and flat heads too. Where to get them can be up to you. Your local automotive store or home improvement store sell some basic tools like this. They are usually in kits or sets. Power tools or air tools are one of those if you are going to use it a lot questions. Well again if you are doing the basics, then no, you do not need these right now. Remember your just starting out, no need to go crazy. Keep the repairs simple.

Air Ratchet Wrench

What about a tool box? Well if you have a lot of tools already, then chances are you have a box of some sort. The cases (if they come in one) the tools came in would be fine for now. But, as you start to get more tools, then yes look into something. No need to go all out here either. Most technicians who work on cars for a living have some massive boxes, I still do. These can cost a pretty penny. You do not need one of these, just keep it simple.

Air Ratchet Wrench

Wrenches come in different sizes, from metric to standard. The best thing I can say here is get both. You never know what type of bolts will come up when repairing. Standard size sets are 1/4, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16 and 7/8 in. As were metric size sets are 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22mm. Get a set which has combination wrenches. These have a boxed end and an open end, and are usually the basic wrench. If you find you need a different size while doing the repair, not in the set. Just get that certain wrench size. No need to get a set that has it in it.

Sockets, ratchets, and extensions can come in a set or tool kit too, usually there all in one box. The thing to look for here would be different ratchet heads. There are a few different sizes here 1/4, 3/4, and 1/2inch's. The littlest size 1/4in. is for like interior trim repairs, or small bolts. The 3/4in. size is more the size you are going to use often. Under trays, filter boxes, repairs like these you will want to use the 3/4in. size. Try not to use the 1/4in. on these; you will end up breaking them. The 1/2in. stuff are going to be the big bolts, like suspension and tires. The socket sizes will depend on the set or kit you get. They will most likely be the same sizes as the wrenches but, with the different ratchet head usages. The extensions come in handy when you can not reach a bolt or nut. You just place the extension between the socket you need and the ratchet head.

Screwdrivers come in different sizes. They can range from large phillps head to small one, same with the standard or straight head ones. They also make a all in one screwdriver that has change-able heads, so you do not need several pairs. I would recommend not getting an all in one, unless it is for around the house use. You will sometimes need the leverage of a single size to remove screws.

Stay within your budget here. You can go crazy with all the different types of tools out there. If you do not have the money, ask around. I am sure a good friend will lend you some tools. Try to get tools that you will use often when doing repairs. They will be worth the money in the long run.

The issue has since been corrected.
