How to Replace a Boat Prop

Learning the basics of replacing a boat prop is required in emergency situations. Experts believe that it is always necessary to carry a spare propeller for emergencies. The emergency replacement propeller should be the same size as the  propeller in regular use. Replacing a prop is generally a simple process which can be done using automobile tools. Boaters require replacing props not only in emergencies but also after the boat has been stored for winter.

The tools required for replacing the prop are pliers, a flathead screwdriver, specialized propeller pliers, a ratchet and rubber gloves. Before touching the prop, rubber gloves should be worn. The edges of props are extremely sharp and could cause deep wounds. Keep a notepad and pencil and make notes of the method of removing the old prop. Replacing a prop is just a matter of reversing the process. Make a note of the orientation of the old prop.  Make a note of the orientation of the key way.

The propeller shaft nut should be loosened at first. Take the nut and washer off. If the nut gives trouble, rub oil over it and leave for 24 hours. If this does not work heating the nut usually does the job. The propeller will now come of easily.

Inspect all the other parts of the prop like the hub, the shaft, the washers and the nuts. Check for wear or damage. If there are damaged parts, replace all the damaged parts. Repairs of damaged parts should be done by specialist and licensed technicians.  Most of the time parts will be beyond repair.

Once the propeller comes off, check the shaft for any entangled garbage. These could be in the form of fishing lines, aquatic plants or other material that gets sucked in when the old propeller was rotating. Clean the shaft completely.  If garbage is left in the shaft it will reduce the efficiency of the engine, more fuel will be guzzled and costly friction damage will be caused to the motor.

Slide the propeller into the shaft. The propeller should make a smacking sound. The nut should now be tightened using a wrench.  The orientation should be accurate. The details on the notepad will help in accurate orientation of the prop. The orientation of the key way should be precise. Make sure all nuts are tight.  Rev the engine to check if the performance is better than the old prop. This will ensure that the new prop has fitted properly.

An inspection of the propeller every year will help the boater maintain the boat better. If the boat is put to a different use for instance if a fishing boat changes to a ski boat, it is important to change the prop to get the best results from the boat.

Experts believe that licensed technicians do the best job of replacing props. They do not advice boaters to replace props themselves. However, in emergency situations, boaters should know the basics of replacing the propeller themselves to avoid unpleasant situations.
